Appropriate career planning starts with self-awareness, that is, the identification of your personality, desires, abilities, talents, and needs. Various career tests reveal the personality type, suitable areas of activity which encourage a person’s self-development and implementation of talents. There are plenty of tests to choose from, so only a test that professionally assesses the personality abilities, aptitudes and provide original advice together with a list of specific professional areas should be considered.
This is exactly what the egoCOMPASS test is, which was developed in the UK. The test performance lasts 3 to 4 hours and consists of two parts. The first part identifies a young person’s general abilities and skills as well as describes the personality characteristics. The second part consists of a career questionnaire that identifies the person’s interests, needs, and perhaps the unspoken desires. It also assesses what subjects the person learns at school or any other educational skills already acquired (if the test is carried out by an adult).
The career choice test is followed by a 16-page original analysis consisting of detailed information about the type of personality and characteristics. Then, a career tree with a list of 12 most relevant specialities is presented. The egoCOMPASS career test indicates which particular specialities are suitable for a person in accordance with unique characteristics and talents possessed. It indicates the professional area the person could develop and become a professional in.
A personal consultation with a professional career counsellor Rytis Jurkėnas takes place according to the egoCOMPASS results. The test results are presented, analysed and further education (the choice of subjects and personal talent development) is recommended during this session. Further education can always be implemented by egoPERFECTUS specialists.
The sixteen-year-old Gabrielė comes from a family with medical parents who are prominent professionals in their fields. The parents expected that their only daughter Gabrielė would follow in their footsteps and become a famous medical specialist. Although Gabrielė was doing well in biology at school, she was not certain whether she wanted to study medicine. She was not sure yet what studies she would like to choose and what profession she would like to be in. Even though Gabrielė was only 16 years old, the tension was beginning to occur in the family as the parents wanted Gabrielė to purposefully seek a career in medicine and choose the advanced biology and chemistry subjects in the 11th and 12th form. However, the girl was not too keen on learning these subjects at an advanced level. She liked take pictures, language lessons.
The tension in the family encouraged them to refer to egoPERFECTUS, and the experts suggested Gabrielė took the original career test egoCOMPASS. Upon the test results, a personal consultation with a professional career counsellor took place. During this consultation, the test results, analysis and recommendations for further development were presented. The test showed that Gabrielė was suitable for a variety of social sciences, such as psychology, sociology, as well as management activities. In fact, she could become an excellent marketing specialist or economist. The test did not show that she could successfully excel in the medical field, however.
After talking to the career counsellor, Gabrielė’s parents realised that they had put too much pressure on their daughter and that medicine was not an area where she could succeed. The test helped Gabrielė to decide what she was willing and able to do in the future, and, therefore, what studies she should choose.
